HELPING MENDAS PROJECT MANAGE
Cognoscenti recently delivered a piece of work for Mendas ltd, which is a London based consultancy company. Mendas was looking to expand further and the Directors wanted to ensure that were able to effectively manage resources and allocate work to their consultants. They asked Cognoscenti to help them build in some project management disciplines to maximise their efficiency. After consultation, Cognoscenti then designed and delivered a workshop to help train Mendas staff in the project management disciplines they needed in order to more efficiently manage their workload and resources. Cognoscenti also produced a manual that Mendas staff could use as a reference document for taking the project management disciplines forward. Comments from Mendas confirm that they were very satisfied with the service that they received:
“Thank you again for being such a brilliant facilitator of our discussions and presenting the material in an interesting and interactive manner. We got out of this what we were hoping for. Well done. There were continuing discussions about the subject after the workshop which showed that all staff members were engaged.” Dirk Palm (Senior Consultant – Mendas)
The Highways Agency took over the powers and functions of the Police in keeping traffic moving on the motorways and reducing congestion. The new Traffic arm involved around 1500 staff and was to be delivered 24/7 on a national basis using a fleet of 4×4’s, various depots and a number of ‘state-of-the-art’ traffic control centres . The Traffic Officers would only have a 30 minute handover at the Depot, including debriefing and had limited PC access. This new arm of the Highways Agency would operate very differently from the other; predominantly office based staff and posed a substantial challenge for the Highways Agency. They needed high level expertise to help them find an appropriate solution.
Sharon was tasked with designing and implementing new processes, to enable Traffic Officers to utilise HR services and carry out HR administration e.g. recording sickness absence, without having to provide additional HR resources in Depots or outside office hours. Sharon identified several HR areas that were core to the successful operation of the traffic function and re-designed the processes so that they could be delivered on-line using a self-service approach. This meant that Traffic Officers could carry out their HR administration either on-line during time at the Depot or alternatively, they could be carried out via a hand held device during downtime on the roads. This avoided the need for additional HR staff and also ensured that Traffic Officers had maximum time on the roads.
